Workpackage Descriptions
WP0 - Project planning Establishment of a detailed plan for the project; identification of dependencies; establishment of a system for monitoring and evaluation of progress. WP1 - Integration of multi-dimensional digital image data Focus on technologies enabling effective harvesting, storage and access to multi-dimensional digital image data and linkage to text-based and factual information. Establishment and development of the functionality of the BioImage database as the preferred repository for all multi-dimensional images associated with ORIEL information. WP2 - Gene-mining Integration of bibliographic data in biology-related fields with bio-informatic tools supporting gene analysis. Will focus on design of XML DTD's for different types of data and will address the question of data evolution and transformation using XSLT. Applicability of the XQUERY, the query language for XML will be explored. The primary goal will be to manage an exponentially growing mass of genomic sequence and sequence-related information in terms of organization, accessibility and retrieval. WP3 - Data Mining Tools Development of data mining tools, which in the case of the Life Sciences will allow users to interpret, integrate and visualize information form a variety of digital resources in order to better describe putative biological gene functions in terms of available knowledge. Making use of Bayesian paragraph analysis, Support vector machines and latent semantic toolkits specific to biological sciences WP4 - Research-oriented inference in the linkage of factual and full text databases Development of a library of software tools for literature in the biological sciences, drawing from the established text processing field. WP5 - Development of adaptive interfaces Creation of an adaptive interface that will facilitate user profiling of information services through a multi-agent system. Devoted to the development of tools that stimulate user interactivity, with focus on collaborative browsing, creation and editing of ontologies. WP6 - Integration and validation Will prototype the outputs of other workpackages within the context of the ORIEL project and will evaluate these outputs to meet the needs of E-BioSci platform end-users. Focussed on integrative aspects of the project, part of which will comprise provision of solutions to the problem of user authentication and rights verification across a range of digital information sources. WP7 - Dissemination and exploitation Addresses questions concerning exploitation of technologies developed within the project, in particular in relation to their implementation within the EU-funded E-BioSci platform and their dissemination to areas outside the life sciences. WP8 - Scientific and technical coordination Deals with the overall scientific, administrative and financial management of the project. |
