Wellness Tourism: Most Popular Countries
Wellness Tourism

Wellness tourism is different than health tourism as it focuses on preventative health processes rather than cures to diseases and afflictions. It usually consists of vacations which include beauty care, physical fitness, health and nutrition, relaxation, meditation and mental stimulation. Hotels dedicated to pampering their guests with superior spa facilities, tranquil solariums, pools with amenities, massage treatments, tennis courts, and hair salons are considered part of the wellness tourism industry. Generally these hotels fall into the four and five star categories.

Resort spas, meditation retreats, and nature tours are important facets of the wellness tourism industry and some countries are more popular than others as wellness destinations. Following are five that tourists enjoy.

Caribbean countries have always been leading destinations for wellness tourism. Rain forests, bright sun, fresh fruit, beautiful birds, and warm, clean air, make any one of the islands a veritable paradise. With the choice of both cruises and on-land vacations, pay-as you-go and all-inclusive weeks, there is plenty of reason to visit the Caribbean and bask in its majestic splendor.

Switzerland has long enjoyed the distinction of being one of the best wellness tourism countries in the world. Interestingly, it is also one of the most expensive, but luxury and quality are important factors for many tourists and Switzerland offers both. Bathing in healing waters is a centuries-old tradition here, particularly the thermal springs of Bad Ragaz. Documents show that as early as the thirteenth century, people made the long journey to Bad Pfäfers just to bathe in the thermal waters. Today, spas, golf courses, treks in the winter snow, mountain hikes, pristine lakes, skiing and tobogganing all contribute to a spectacular holiday.

The Philippines is the ideal wellness tourism destination due to several factors. The culture of true Filipinos exudes gentleness, kindness and nurturing others, while the land is rich in tropical forests, white sandy beaches, majestic mountains, an active volcano, and more than one beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a vast array of fish and coral species, diving and snorkeling are must-do activities. And for those more interested in exploring the caves, white water rafting, climbing a mountain or kayaking and canoeing, there is a never ending supply of outdoor activities to stimulate the mind and create harmony.

Turkey is a special place that mixes the old world with new. It is also boasts access to several beautiful bodies of water including the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and the Sea of Marmara. Additionally, thirty-nine national parks are home to various forms of flora and fauna, archaeological ruins, sempervirens forests, Monk seals, and historically significant landmarks. Turkey is known for its hot springs and mineral baths, and is reputed to have in excess of thirteen hundred thermal springs. Not only are the waters important, but also the mud baths, and in certain spots, the little fish that help with skin problems.
