One of ORIEL's objectives is the definition of strict standards of representation and exchange of the biological factual information. In this context BOX (BOXml and BOXtk) is primarily a core library of XML-Schema specifications. Its goal is to provide XML-Schema components (rather than definitive format specifications) to XML designers, that provide an open core of well-defined UML and XML specifications for the dissemination of genomic data. The first release of the core library deals with metabolic data and genome annotation data and is composed of :

  • Model specification
  • XML-Schema implementations
  • Associated documentation

BOX is organised in modules (15 modules in BOX version 1.0) that may be reused either in BOX or in other XML projects. Future releases may also include a Java toolkit for manipulating these data and thus enhance the data-mining capabilities of application programs. Current versions of BOXml, BOXtk and BOXweb can be downloaded here, but please check the INRIA BOX web-pages for news of other releases.
