Map Showing Location of EMBO/EMBL in Heidelberg

EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) is located next to the EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory). Although tucked away up the hill in the forest in Heidelberg's neighbourhood of Boxberg, it is reachable in about 10 minutes, by car, from Heidelberg's city centre.

Our address is: Meyerhofstrasse 1, Heidelberg (Boxberg), Germany. (Click here for a map showing where EMBL/EMBO is located in Heidelberg.)

Travel by car
From the Autobahn A5, take the Heidelberg–Schwetzingen exit, south of the city centre, and head for Heidelberg–Emmertsgrund–Boxberg, B3. Go up the hill, turn left at the Aral petrol station and go straight through the Boxberg residential area keeping left after the EMBL guesthouse. EMBL is located in the forest on your right just before you reach the Bierhelder Hof restaurant.

There is limited parking at EMBL. Please use the bus service provided when possible during meetings, conferences and courses.

Travel by train
Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) is located in the city centre. There are express services to all countries in Europe by ICE (directly or via Mannheim), IC/EC or Interregional trains. Train schedules can be found on Deutsche Bahn Travel Service.

Bus 21 (direction Königstuhl) leaves from Heidelberg Bismarckplatz, the main bus and tram stop in the city centre. The first bus leaves at 06:30 and as of 07:00 there is one bus every full hour. Get off at Bierhelderhof bus stop, turn right down the hill, take the road to the left, Bierhelderhofweg, walk down past the farm, turn left up the hill, Meyerhofstraße, bear left in front of the EMBO building and continue up to EMBL main entrance on the right.

Bus 29 goes from Bismarckplatz via Rohrbach to the ISG Hotel where the EMBL shuttle bus picks up in the morning and drops off in the evening (or to Boxbergring and walk through the woods with someone who knows the way!)

Tram 4 goes from the station or Tram 3 goes from Bismarckplatz to Rohrbach Süd and then Bus28, 29 or 31 to ISG Hotel or Boxbergring as above. For other connections and up-to-date schedules please refer to the general VRN bus schedule: www.vrn.de/index_nn.html

A one way fare costs 1,90 euro to be paid cash to the conducter. Even if your journey is a combination of a tram and bus ride, you just pay once.

Travel by taxi
Taxis are available outside the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) or can be contacted on 06221 302030. The journey to EMBL will cost 13,00–19,00 euro. Most drivers know where EMBL is (the acronym is pronounced "Embul" by most locals).

Travel by plane
Frankfurt International airport is the closest, 80 km, and most convenient airport for Heidelberg. Check the website s.v. getting to/from for travel details and schedules.

There are two railway stations at Frankfurt Airport with routes to Heidelberg as follows:

The long distance trains leave from the Fernbahnhof and represent the faster but more expensive option. Normally it is necessary to change at Mannheim. Single tickets cost around 22,00 euro depending on the class of train (ICE, IC or EC).

The regional trains leave from the Regionalbahnhof and are cheaper but slower. Normally there is a change at Frankfurt mainline station and single tickets cost around 14,00 euro depending on the class (RE express or RB stopping train)

There are also several car rental companies at the airport. Driving takes a little over an hour to Heidelberg depending on the time of day. When setting off from the Airport parking facilities or the terminal follow the blue motorway signs. From the airport, go initially toward Frankfurt and watch for the signs to Basel and Karlsruhe. Head south on Autobahn A5, after approximately 30 km, you will approach Darmstadt, Darmstädterkreuz, where the autobahn divides into the A5 and A67. You can take either of these; the A5 is the eastern route and is the more direct route.

Frankfurt Hahn–Hunsrück airport is a small airport west of Frankfurt International Airport and is the base of the cheap Ryanair airline. It is more difficult to reach, however, there are now shuttle busses running from Mainz and Frankfurt. Even though you may find a cheap air fare to and from Frankfurt Hahn, you will find you need to add considerable travel time to your journey.
